Westonka Students Participate in Community Memorial Day Event
The WHS band performed at the Memorial Day service May 25.
Memorial Day is more than just a day off. It’s a time for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude. Westonka students took time to honor and remember our nation’s fallen soldiers by participating in the community Memorial Day service at the Gillespie Center on May 25.
The Westonka High School band performed several patriotic numbers, uniformed students from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were on hand, and student readers shared essays they had written. American Legion Post 398, Auxiliary 398, and SAL Squadron 398 of Mound presented the colors and ran the program.
Several Westonka Middle School sixth grade language arts students were chosen to read their essays on “What the American Flag Means to Me” at the ceremony. Essays were chosen based on quality, content, shared experiences, and their efforts towards describing the meaning of the flag to them. The winning essays were written by Rhett Wesley, Campbell Hoag, Vivian Diezi, Sloan Olsen, Athena Kelber, Etta Stadick, Clara Adamson, Silas Hemme, Elijah Hunt, Niko Pekarek, Lenna Syndergaard, Connor Peren, Micah Mazzara, Vaida Jaunzemis, and Stella Martsen.
In addition to the Star-Spangled Banner, the WHS band performed the service anthem of each branch of the Armed Forces as community members remembered and honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“The band was honored to perform at the Memorial Day Service, paying tribute to the brave men and women who served our country,” said Director Christopher Moore.
